Types of Latin American Dances
Non-professional people tend to confuse Latin American dances with Caribbean ones, which instead belong to a category on their own. Today we are going to explain which are the official dances, recognized in international competitions.
Officially, we have five different types of Latin American dances:
- Samba, which has its origins in Brazil, from a music mainly used in religion;
- Cha-Cha-Cha, a dance that comes from Cuba;
- Rumba, coming from the island of Cuba too, with a several variants;
- Paso Doble,born in Spain, miming the moves of the bullfighter during bullfighting;
- Jive, popular in North America around the 30s. It was initially danced only by African Americans who lived in those areas.
All dances are couple dances and are necessary to be in tune with your partner in order to reach a level that makes the movements fluid and beautiful to see.

Latin American or Caribbean dances?
Caribbean dances are the most popular in dance schools and, for this reason, they are wrongly confused with the Latin American ones. We have three types of dances: Bachata, Salsa, Merengue.
Competitiveness in Latin American dances
Latin dances are officially recognized in competitive dance. In Italy, the only federation recognized by CONI is the FIDS, which provides different competitions and performances by category, age and preparation of each couple.
