Hallux Valgus

L'hallux valgus is a very common foot condition. It is characterised by outward displacement of the base of the big toe and deviation of the tip of the big toe towards the other toes.

Conservative treatments can be: use of special shoes that maintain correct positioning of the toes. application of toe pads and insoles. application of a bandage that restores the correct position of the toes and relieves pain.

It is possible, however, manage pathology with non-surgical solutions valid. It is advisable to use it in minor cases or at the onset of symptoms: for this the prevention is of paramount importance.

In the early stages of the disease, one can resort to conservative therapiesuseful in stopping or at least significantly slowing the progression of the condition and managing the symptoms of hallux valgus without intervention:

-packs of ice applied several times a day to relieve pain and inflammation

custom-made insolesmade by a podiatrist or specialised technician. We suggest having one for 'urban' use and a thinner one for use during training or Sport Dance competitions.

-pharmacological therapy with anti-inflammatories and painkillers as needed.

-eventual seepage of cortisone or hyaluronic acid, as prescribed by the orthopaedist.

physiotherapy and physical therapies such as shock waves, ultrasound or laser therapy

-use of bracessilicone spreaders (both day and night) to keep the big toe separate from the other toes, elastic sheaths with silicone pads to protect exostosis and bursitis, dynamic articulating splints

-use of appropriate dance shoes or with the possibility of accommodating insoles, with special models providing the right support and allowing the fingers to fit comfortably. In both cases, our company has models made specifically for the purpose.

When conservative therapies fail to achieve appreciable results or when the pathology is already at an advanced stage, it is necessary to resort to the surgeryalso because an untreated hallux valgus can lead to serious and painful consequencessuch as thearthrosis.

Hallux valgus is a very common foot pathology. It is characterised by the outward displacement of the base of the big toe and the deviation of the tip of the big toe towards the other toes.

Among the common treatments for the hallux valgus there are the usage of special shoes that maintain the correct position of the toes, the application of toe separator pads and insoles, or the application of a bandage that restores the correct position of the fingers and relives pain.

It is possible to manage the pathology with methos that do not require surgery. Prevention has a fundamental importance in this situation.

The initial stages of the pathology can be managed with conservative therapies that can stop or at least slow down the progression of the hallux valgus and that can help with the symptoms. Some examples are:

ice packs applied several times a day to relieve pain and inflammation.

custom-made insole made by a podiatrist or a specialised technician. We suggest having one for the daily life and a thinner one for training or competition.

pharmacological therapy with anti-inflammatories.

infiltrations of cortisone or hyaluronic acid when prescribed by the orthopaedist.

physiotherapy and physical therapies such as shock waves, ultrasound or laser therapy.

silicone tools to keep the big toe separated from the other toes or elastic sheaths with silicone pads.

-use of specific dance shoes or dance shoes that allows you to put your own insoles. Our company provides both possibilities.

When these therapies do not achieve appreciable results or when the pathology is already at an advanced stage, surgery is necessary. An untreated hallux valgus can lead to serious and painful consequences such as arthrosis.
