What are Latin American dances
The uninitiated often tend to confuse Latin American dances with Caribbean dances, which instead belong to a separate category. Today we are going to explain which are actually official dances, recognised in international competitions. So, what are Latin American dances?
Officially there are five types of Latin American dance:
- Sambawhich has its origins in Brazil and developed from music predominantly used in religion;
- Cha-cha-chadance that comes from Cuba;
- Rumbaalso from the island of Cuba, and of which there are several variants;
- Paso Doblewho was born in Spain and mimics the bullfighter's moves during the bullfight;
- Jive, popular in North America in the 1930s. It was initially danced only by African Americans living in those areas;
All dances are partner dances and a attunement with one's partner to reach a level where movements are smooth and beautiful to look at.

Latin American dancing or Caribbean dancing?
Caribbean dances, on the other hand, are those most commonly found in dance schools and, for this very reason, are mistakenly confused with Latin American dance. There are three: bachata, salsa and merengue.
