Waltz steps

Waltz is a typical Austrian dance, of the capital Vienna and is famous for being one of the most romantic dances of the bigger group of Ballroom Dances. The first one to compose Waltz music was the composer Johann Baptist Strauss, but it then spread to the rest of Europe as well. Thanks to his steps, not very complex, Waltz is still performed during ceremonies such as weddings or formal balls.

There are two types of Waltzes widely spread all over the world: a rather slow version, called slow or English Waltz and a faster one, represented by the Viennese Waltz. Let’s see how to learn the steps.

English and Viennese Waltz

The English Waltz spread around the end of the nineteenth century in America and takes its cue from the Viennese Waltz, but modifies its movements making them slower and inserting foot swipes and effective pauses. Is a couple dance but, unlike Tango or Latin American dances, Waltz focuses on the elegance of the movements rather than sensuality. The basic steps are similar in both versions, but the rhythm changes depending on the music used, which can be slow or fast.

The first basic step involves the man taking one step forward with his left foot, one diagonally with his right and then putting the feet together. Then, he steps back with his right foot and diagonally with his left. Feet together again.

The steps of the woman will mirror and follow those of the man: step back with right foot, left diagonal and feet together. And so on. Pay attention to the posture: straight back and well pointy elbows are the prerogative of the movements of the Waltz. Once you have learned the basic steps you can add embellishments such as 360 degree spins, openings and figure combinations that will make the dance much more interesting to watch.

What you need to start dancing the Waltz

Waltz’s steps are not too difficult to learn and, with a bit of good will, you’ll achieve good results. To start, you could opt for slow music, just to become familiar with the movements.
