The origins of standard dances

Standard dances are officially part of the International sport dance disciplines organized by FIDS and include five different dances:

  • Slow Waltz: a slower version of the classical Viennese waltz. The name comes from the word “weller”, that means spinning over yourself, like it happens in the dance steps. Thanks to his delicate movements, it is a very romantic dance and is still danced during galas or weddings.
  • Tango: the king of Argentine dances, famous for his strong and angry rhythm. Many movements are jerky and partners need to be close-knit to perform at the best. Because of his sensuality, Tango has been, for a long time, the suburbs dance and it was also condemned by the Church.
  • Viennese Waltz: the original version of the slow waltz, was born in Austria but has been modified depending on the spreading country. It provides very quick rhythms and has particularly developed to the Maria Antonietta Court, before being exported all over Europe.
  • Slow-trot: his music comes from Ragtime, an ancient of what we all know as Jazz. The original version, simply called Fox-trot, provides very quick rhythms, jumps and turns, sometimes quite difficult. It’s for this reason that, when the Slow-trot entered in the standard dances, in 1914, his movements had been simplified. Now, we have two styles: a slower and a faster one.

Quickstep: as the name suggests, Quickstep is characterized for the fastest of his steps and is a mix of different styles of 1920-1930. Fox-trot, Charleston and Shang are only some of the dances famous in those years. Quickstep’s rhythm is very fast and is accompanied by music similar to the jazz one.
