How to dance the Tango: the origins
Tango is an elegant and very sensual dance that has its origins in Argentina, at the beginning of the twentieth century. Just like the other dances, the Argentine Tango was born as a folk dance, and then spread around the 30s and 40s, becoming one of the most popular dances on the world scene. At the beginning it featured a mix of sounds and styles that included the milonga and the Andalusian tango, with a trio of three instruments: piano, violin and accordion. Over the time, the dance spread and real orchestras were formed, playing Tango in dance halls all over the world. But how can you dance the Tango?

Dance the Tango
Learning to dance the Tango is not always easy, especially due to the level of confidence that this dance requires. The Tango is in fact famous for being a sensual dance which, in its movements, does not leave much room for the imagination. The two partners must therefore be in harmony with each other to make the movements as harmonious and free as possible.
The general rhythm of the dance is pretty easy to remember: slow, slow, fast, fast, slow. Let’s now see the basic steps.
- For the person leading the movement, the sequence will be: left foot forward, right foot forward, forward again with the left. At this point the right foot takes a step to the right and is then joined by the left. Proceeding sideways instead you will have: left direction with left foot forward, then right, left again and feet together at the end.
- For the person being carried, the sequence will simply be the other way around: back with the right foot, then back again with the left and again with the right. One step to the left with the left foot and then the union of both feet. Same mirror procedure for the side step.
Posture is essential for both partners: your back should be straight, with your head held high and your face relaxed. The two people will have to stay close through a sensual hug, which usually involves one hand behind the neck and the other on the back. Once you have become familiar with these first basic steps, you can then try your hand at more complex movements such as rotations and turns.
Learning the Tango is a process that cannot be done in a short time: it is a dance that requires a certain dedication and it is right to dedicate time to it.
