Ballroom: what dances are?

The origins of ballroom

Ballroom’s origins have to be found around the end of 1800, when the bourgeoisie organized dances to entertain the richest guests of society.

The dances were similar to the chivalry ones and, for this reason, ballroom dances have acquired movements from international Ballroom ones. The main dances were three:

  • Slow Waltz;
  • Tango;
  • Fox-trot

Despite the international origins of these dances, the ballroom’s fever came to Italy very quickly and became a tradition in our country too. The spread in Italy occurred around mid-1900, when people of all ages were together in dance halls to spend time dancing and chatting.

With the arrival of other music genres, Ballroom lost part of their charm, but, thanks to ANMB (Associazione Nazionale Maestri di Ballo), they became an official discipline of sport dance, recognized in the most important international competitions.

Differences between Waltz, Tango and Fox-trot

With the Slow Waltz, we mean a dance with similar moves to English Waltz. Walts has, in fact, different versions, in order to adapt to different sounds: it can be slower, as in the Ballroom case, or faster, as the Viennese.

Tanto has been imported by Argentina and, during time, has been modified several times, both to adapt to European standards and to code it as an international sport discipline. Is the king of the elegant dances.

Born in America, the Fox-trot has been modified many times, to adapt it for the different countries and cultures. Italy is not different and adopts new movements, transforming this dance in a typical Italian one.
